“You’re just a simple boat man.” – Dr. Krieger
“I didn’t say anything about being simple.” – Jack Carver
Oh, Uwe Boll. Widely considered one of the worst directors alive and known for taking meterwurst sized dumps on video game properties that apparently some people still care about.
Jack Carver (Til Schweiger) is a former special forces operative who no charters boats for a living. Jack is hired by a Seattle reporter, Valerie Cardinal (Emmanuelle Vaugier), whose uncle has contacted her regarding a scientist that hired him who is doing some rather dastardly deeds creating mindless super soldiers.
I can’t really say whether or not this follows the story of the first game or not. I know it is nothing like the game that I played (Far Cry 2). The story is sort of like a poor man’s Universal Soldier. It isn’t original but it was kinda fun… in a mindless action movie sort of way.
The super soldiers were created well. I liked their look and the way the moved and acted. Still very Universal Soldier but, I guess, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
The acting is really hit or miss. No one is winning any awards but I have definitely seen worse.
I normally like Til Schweiger but I found Jack to be rather grating at the beginning. He grows on you a little but I didn’t ever get behind him the way I should have considering he was our main hero. He certainly looks the part of the badass ex special forces turned drunkard boat charter.
The action is competently filmed with some genuinely nice gunfire and explosion effects. I found it fun when the cars/jeeps got shot up they would start o fire before finally exploding. Very video game-esque. I also counted 3 separate times that someone was shot directly in the eye. What are the odds?
The music is obnoxious. I’ve heard better in just about every video game I have played.
The dialogue is also pretty hokey but it works. There are a few attempted jokes that are thrown in. When Jack and Valerie climb into bed together to “warm up” this lovely exchange is uttered.
“Is that your gun?” – Valerie Cardinal
“Well I never go to bed without it.” – Jack Carver
I have to say, I don’t completely understand why Uwe Boll gets so much hate. Don’t get me wrong, he is a pretty terrible director but his movies are always straight to DVD in the states and he is generally creating movies based on movie franchises that are less than current. Far Cry was a four year old property at the time this was released and many of his other releases (BloodRayne, Postal, Alone in the Dark or House of the Dead) aren’t what one might call the top pickins of video game properties. The piss poor Prince of Persia adaptation is a far bigger offense in my book and Disney made that.
I guess I didn’t hate Far Cry because it was pretty much what I would have expected from a Uwe Boll DTV video game adaptation. It is mostly pretty dumb but has its moments where it is actually kinda fun and that was enough to carry it through.
